about us

A social group of dedicated fly fishers who are passionate about fly fishing in the tropical north of Australia and equally as passionate about the close camaraderie this sport brings. This passion and dedication led to the creation of the NT Flyfishers Social Mob blog site; an interactive and creative outlet where everyone can share our wonderful fly fishing adventures and link into the “after fishing” social events we enjoy in this incredible part of the world.

Fly Tying Day & a Kakadu Billabong

The last Sunday in June saw us gather for some fly tying & socialising.  It was beautiful relaxing afternoon with some excellent refreshments.  We even tied a few flies!

Kate declared she would like to try & set up the go pro camera for some live streaming action.  A very patient lady spent some time watching a tutorial before success was declared!  Kate is hearby now known as 'Kate the live streaming legend'.  Many thanks for your efforts Kate!  This is a great use of technology which will allow us to put fly tying on to the projector screen!

Lord Jim put in an appearance around the time the food came out.  He advised that one of our favourite billabongs was open for business.  After a great afternoon the guests began to depart & so did our dog Diesel (thanks Cathie & Roggie).

We had decided then & there on a spontaneous trip to Kakadu.  Off to the shops to grab fuel, a cooked chook & some salads (BBQ shapes won't cut it with Jack!).  The boat & camping gear were prepared that night.

Waking at 0400hrs we had some brekkie & headed off down the highway.
After some difficulty with the creek crossing (need to "give it some" as they say) we launched around day break.  The water looked great but could of been a bit on the cool side, 26.7 deg c in the morning.  Fishing was tough with only a handful caught the first day.

The Saratoga seemed to be especially difficult to hook?  Many takes & special words used until finally on the second day we both got some on fly.  Jacks  best fish was thumper in beautiful condition.

After fishing from one end of the billabong to the other we eventually found small barra on a snag right next to the camp!  This made the trip providing a few hours of entertainment extracting them.

The great thing about these billabongs is you can fish anytime, come back to camp whenever you like & leave your boat in the water for the duration of your stay.  Camping at this time of year is usually cool (if we get a dry season?) & the scenery is spectacular.

We will be back.

Get out & fish!

Jon & Jack
