If I went to see Pink Floyd it would be expected I would have to pay a premium price for the ticket, I certainly would not consider turning up wearing a pair of hearing protectors.
This guy is booked to specifically go sight fishing with me for 3 days. We did it, right, time of year tides etc. he had the gear the fly's the lines and in my opinion the guide to do all this.
Every time I said" there is a fish" or "did you see that" he said no can you say 9 o'clock or 6 o'clock whatever ,sometimes fish are not like that, seeing them coming or having
short ethereal views basically flitting in and out of your peripheral vision is normal.
This photo demonstrates even with his concerns about skin cancers that you fail before you get started.
Hi Graeme,
ReplyDeleteI couldnt agree more. I took a guy out on the Annie flats last weekend. He claimed he had polaroids, I was pointing out good barra to him for 2 hrs and his casts were landing miles away from the fish, so as you do, I took advantage of the situation and promptly caught the fish that I had seen. After a another cast that landed no where near the fish, I questioned the validity of his polarized sunglasses claim. Low and behold they were not polarized and he couldnt see a thing. I ended up with 6 barra to about 65cm lost 3 or 4 other and dropped a good salmon, he caught a longtom.
I often get this, especially the glasses that have leather side protectors on them it is so important to be aware and that means from the horizon back,i find a lot of professionals like doctors Dentists etc. if they don't do a lot of fishing there field of view is out to 25ft.
ReplyDeleteGuiding is great and when you go back and there answer to inquiries is I didn't see much.WTF

ReplyDeleteI have one rule, if it looks like a fish it is a fish, but I do cast at tree roots a lot. Really fishing looking roots though.
ReplyDeleteHappens all the time, and its a shame. People, even if they do have the best glasses often don't know what they are looking for. They expect to see a silhouette of a barra dark and sharp against a clear bottom.
ReplyDeleteI always tell people to look for anything that isn't a tree or a root or a rock, be that a slowly moving shadow, a small patch of yellow tail wafting which is easily mistaken for a cast mangrove leaf or a small puff of dust in the water.
When people specifically ask to go 'sight fishing' it can quickly go from potential trip of a lifetime to a caught nothing and never go back story at a fancy bar in sydney for some people. Thats the nature of ability based fishing charters though.
I now stand at the front of the boat to work the electric, with a long spin rod rigged up with a weedless plastic. i use it to point as much as i can and if that doesn't work, ill try and illustrate by casting at that 'whats that' shape as it swims slowly off and then pass the rod over (with varied success!).
